A Letter from Hiroko
The Story Behind How I Started Making Oil Pastels
My family’s art supply store was founded in Osaka in 1920.
For more than 20 years, I served artists there, learning the quality they truly demand.
Some colors and sizes cannot be made by machines or factories.
When manufacturers said it was impossible, I chose to make it by hand.
That is how BIG OIL PASTEL was born — my answer to what art materials should be.

blend pigments by hand, without relying on any recipe - trusting years of experience and intuition, mixing colors along a theme as if I were painting a picture. Then I fold in a generous amount of oil, giving each pastel its rich, buttery smoothness.

Each color blend is carefully hand-pressed into our proprietary molds, one piece at a time, shaping the pastel with the same attention we give to mixing the pigments themselves.

Finishing Finishing
Once each pastel is molded, I wrap it by hand, one by one, in its own paper sleeve. Lining up all one hundred colors and placing them into the box — that is the moment a single work of art iscomplete. I pour the same care into this final step as I do into every step before it, so that when it reaches your hands, you can feel as much thought as there is color inside.

What Creators Say

Message
The words “DRAW YOUR WORLD” on the BIG OIL PASTEL series package carry my wish that you will enjoy drawing freely.
I believe color is a symbol of peace.
I imagine the colors I make reaching artists’ hands and, through their work, bringing beauty to the world.
Holding that image in my heart, I make pastels each day with joy.
